Get-Fit Gifts

Spread good cheer (and good health) this holiday

By Erica K. Perkins, Fitness Director, University of Virginia

Short on gift ideas this year? Think fitness. If a friend or family member on your list has expressed any interest in getting healthy or is a regular exerciser, a health/fitness-related gift might be perfect. The gifts below can range from $5 to $100. But no matter the cost, these gifts will send the message that you really care about someone's well-being.

Netflix memberships – For under $10 a month, you can give someone a variety of exercise DVDs for in-home workouts.

hand resistResistance bands, jump ropes, and small dumbbells are great stocking stuffers and cost less than $20. These are also wonderful gifts for those who travel and need something small to pack to continue their workout on the road.

Health – related magazine subscriptions offer lots of options and cost between $10 and $25 for a year subscription. Some popular magazines to consider: Oxygen, Men's-Fitness, Prevention, Total Health and Pilates Style.

Pedometers and heart-rate monitors are especially useful for monitoring daily activities and aerobic workouts. These items have a full range of models with different bells, whistles and prices associated with them, but more doesn't always mean better. Pick one within your budget.

Resist-a-balls, medicine balls, weighted bars, foam rollers, or yoga mats, straps or blocks are perfect for strengthening and stretching activities. Most of these items sell for less than $40.

Fitness apparel – Everyone likes to feel good while exercising so new clothing that wicks away sweat is very appealing. You can get wicking shirts, shorts, jog bras, socks and pants. Most of these items cost less than $50.

Workout bags – Everyone needs a good gym bag and depending on the type of exercise your friends or family do, they may have specific needs like the amount of pockets, type of straps, etc. Workout bags can be dressy, practical or a combo.

Holiday fitness gift bag – Create this one yourself by including a couple of the above items along with a book or DVD that provides instruction on how to use any of the items in the new bag.

Gift certificates for massages, personal training sessions, gym memberships or a nutrition consultation are great ways to start or stay healthy and let your family or friend know you truly care about their health. A good idea is to purchase the certificate at the service location so you can be sure that the atmosphere will be appropriate for the recipient.gift

A gift that supports health and fitness is practical and will be appreciated for many years to come. Don't forget to give yourself the gift of fitness by making exercise a priority during the busy holiday season and winter months.
